Project:University of Southampton, Pre-clinical Science Building

Brief:
The Pre-Clinical Science Building forms part of the University of Southampton.

The subjects housed, include Anatomy and Human Morphology, Physiology and Biochemistry. Pharmacology and Pathology, Microbiology and Histology, Zoology and Genetics, with attendant animal house facilities and radioactive suite.

Design Solution:
The requirements of the brief were resolved into three particular areas: pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow, a structural solution to allow for expansion at any point on the plan; and a plan solution to allow differing amenities (teaching, library, lecture theatres, animal houses) to expand independently of each other.

Two distinct east-west lines of flow – the service road to the north and a parallel pedestrian avenue to the south separating the laboratories, library and lecture theatres – Resolved the various requirements for future expansion.

The building is sheathed in bronze glass in a system which runs full length between the external beams.
